Dee Park Community Woodland
Care and Repair North East Wales moved to the site of the former Shotton Steelworks Sports and Social Club in 2018.
The site is located alongside the Dee Estuary and Wales Coast Path and cycle route and links the town of Shotton with the coast. We are developing the 37-acre site, including sports fields and the adjoining Dee Park and woodland to provide a community hub for Deeside that we call ’A Place For You’.
Dee Park had been neglected for many years and had become a haunt for drug addicts who left debris and whose presence put off other users. Litter was also a big problem.
Since October 2021, funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Welsh Government has enabled us to create a Community Woodland on Dee Park. With support from the local community, we have planted over 5500 trees, cleared drug debris, opened up site lines, cut back rank grass and thistles and laid a fully accessible surfaced path. This has created a much-needed accessible green space within a short walk of Shotton.
Would you like to get involved?
Engagement with the local community was a key part of this woodland creation project and a part-time community ranger was employed to facilitate this. We have involved volunteers of varying ages including groups of Army Veterans, adults with additional needs, volunteers from local businesses and a number of local residents. In addition, pupils from local primary schools and one secondary school have planted trees.
Volunteering
Work is always better when you work as part of a team. If you want to get involved in the Dee Park Community Woodland Project, whether that’s litter picking, planting trees, recording the wildlife we have on site or just helping with the teas and coffees for a community event we would love to hear from you. Full induction and training will be given.
